These are just a so-called mild hybrid, namely an electric motor merely supports the combustion engine. In a full-hybrid vehicle that can autonomously against one of the two drive systems are used. In both cases, the electric motor (sometimes several electric motors) during braking energy driven.
Hybrid versions of the E-Class, the M-Class and GL-Class will follow before 2010, reports Edmunds.com. The parent company DaimlerChrysler is also working with BMW and General Motors to develop a new hybrid propulsion system. When vehicles with this system on the market, is not yet known.
Up to Lexus and Mercedes DaimlerChrysler to Toyota in hybrids have open field, some years. But a start has been made and the competition will spur technological progress.
