“If the other car manufacturer ever the hybrid market leader Toyota able to?” I asked three months ago here in the car weblog to the world premiere of the LS 600h L, the hybrid version of the top 460 of the LS model Toyota Lexus luxury brand. The LS 600h L is in 2007 in Germany. And then there are still two more models with Lexus hybrid, the GS 450h and the RX 400h, a hybrid of several cars of the Toyota brand times quite apart from which it is in Germany but until now only the Prius. In at least six years, all Toyota models, including the Lexus, either with hybrid drive. In the U.S., hybrid cars already a huge success.

Mercedes is now in 2008 the timid beginning of a catching up in the luxury segment and a hybrid version of the S-Class on the market, reported auto motor and sport. These are just a so-called mild hybrid, namely an electric motor merely supports the combustion engine. In a full-hybrid vehicle that can autonomously against one of the two drive systems are used. In both cases, the electric motor (sometimes several electric motors) during braking energy driven.

Hybrid versions of the E-Class, the M-Class and GL-Class will follow before 2010, reports Edmunds.com. The parent company DaimlerChrysler is also working with BMW and General Motors to develop a new hybrid propulsion system. When vehicles with this system on the market, is not yet known.

Up to Lexus and Mercedes DaimlerChrysler to Toyota in hybrids have open field, some years. But a start has been made and the competition will spur technological progress.
